There was a time when no Thanksgiving meal in America was complete without oysters. Oysters on the half shell, oyster stew, oyster stuffing, oysters everywhere.  America was absolutely obsessed with the tasty bivalves in the Victorian era as evidenced by this awesome collection of Historical Menus.

This was no fad. The almighty oyster’s place at the Thanksgiving table is steeped in history. Oysters were brought by the Native Americans to the first inaugural Thanksgiving feast. Teddy Roosevelt famously slurped down myriad an oyster at The Old Ebbitt Grill just outside the White House after a long day of trust busting and expanding America’s national park system. And when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corp during the Great Depression, what did the Corp serve on Thanksgiving Day to millions of unemployed and hungry Americans? You guessed it, oysters (along with turkey of course). And no they didn’t serve turducken, just in case you were wondering.

But since the time of the Golden Age, oysters have become hard to come by. The crash of the industry is well documented and understood. However, we at Anderson’s Neck are striving to bring the oyster back. We use sustainable farming techniques to help restore America’s bivalve to its former glory at tables nationwide.

So perhaps you may have heard that Maryland lays claim to “Crab Cakes and Football” as portrayed by the hilarious scene from the movie, “The Wedding Crashers”:
